Katazome is a traditional Japanese stencil method, that uses a paste resist to protect areas of paper or cloth from dye applications, resulting in striking contrasting patterns. Katazome stencil techniques can be used for decorative imagery in artworks, on home decor items and even on clothing.

In this workshop we will be creating and applying our own katazome stencil patterns on Japanese papers and using a traditional Japanese kakkishibu (green persimmon) dye to create colour contrast. You will learn how to make and apply katazome paste, create stencil patterns and use kakkishibu dye. You will go home with your own Katazome stencil artwork and an appreciation for this ancient technique.
